When does my heater need repairs?

Know when to call a Heating repair Service specialist

Depending on the heating unit that you have, there are various signs to look for, the most obvious being no heat in your home. Boilers and furnaces both heat up your home, but do so in vastly different ways, so be on the look out for their respective signs of when they need repairs or replacing.

Boilers

Furnaces

Should I Repair or Replace my Heater?

Sometimes Heating Repair Service costs outweigh the price of a new system

Often times, the cost or repairing a furnace or boiler exceeds half the price of a new system which is a telltale sign that you should start searching for a new heating system. Other signs that a replacement is necessary instead of a repair is when repairs and tune ups become more frequent yet still don’t seem to last. If your heater emits noxious fumes like carbon monoxide, have the system replaced as soon as possible.

If you are unsure about your heating system, be sure to consult an HVAC technician with any questions you may have. They can inspect and diagnose the problem and how to move forward with resolving the issues. For more information, contact us today.

No Ductwork in Your Home?

If your home has no ductwork, you can learn more about alternative solutions here. If you’re looking for ductwork to be installed, be sure to contact H.T.R. What is HVAC?

What is HVAC?

Are you a new home owner? Someone in the market for an HVAC system? A curious researcher looking for some HVAC basics? Well, you’ve come to the right place! We at HTR Mechanical, LLC. are here to answer your HVAC questions such as “What is HVAC” and more!

What does HVAC stand for?

HVAC is an acronym for …

Heating

hvac levittown pa

Includes appliances like water heaters, furnaces, boilers and etc…

Ventilation

ac service company Levittown

Refers to vents, duct work and etc…

Air Conditioning

hvac newtown pa

Includes mini ductless splits, air scrubbers, and commercial AC, etc…

Together heating, ventilation and air conditioning make up your whole HVAC system. Their purpose is moving air, throughout your home or office, between the indoors and outdoors. Moreover, this circulates the air to keep it fresh but also allows for the air to be heated or cooled so everyone in the building is comfortable. Thus, it goes without saying that ventilation moves the air, the heater will warm the air and the air conditioner will cool the air.

What is HVAC System?

HVAC systems have the job of warming or cooling spaces but also improving indoor air quality so everyone in the home or office is comfortable. The ventilation system is responsible for bringing fresh air from outside in to the indoors. Additionally, there are two methods of ventilation, natural and mechanical.

Natural ventilation, which most homes can utilize, refers to air moving in and out of the building via windows, doors, vents and other openings.

Mechanical ventilation uses duct-work and other similar set ups to move outdoor air, inside. This is also how air can be filtered, warmed and cooled all year around.

When air is brought in it will go through a filter that catches dust, allergens and other particles. Then, depending on the actual room temperature and what your thermostat is set to the air will be moved to the heater or air conditioner before being pushed fully inside and in the room. Because of this, filters are very important to the maintenance of any HVAC system and air scrubbers can be installed for even cleaner air quality.

When was HVAC invented?

The first modern air conditioning system was invented in 1902 by an engineer names Willis Carrier. He built this version to combat humidity in a printing company building.   Although, other versions existed before that. For example, the Massachusetts Medical Building is regarded as the first U.S. building to have central heat and that was in the year 1816. Despite that, central heating didn’t become common until the 1950s. While having air conditioning was also common place in the 1950s, central air didn’t really become the norm till the 1970s.

Get Your Heating Repair Before Winter

Get Your Heating Repair Before Winter

If your familiar with the North East Coast states of PA, NJ, DE, NY and so on, then you know just how brutally cold the winters here can be. This is not the season you want your heater to fail! During the summer its easy to forget about our heaters and neglect their maintenance before winter comes. Regardless, it is very important you make sure your heater is ready before you really need it. Today we are going to go over common heating repair and general maintenance that should be done before the winter season sets in.

Since your HVAC is a complicated system we would not recommend trying any of these repairs yourself. If you need any maintenance or repair and your in the Bucks County, PA area, then know you can call HTR Mechanical for all your HVAC service needs!

Common Heating Repair Issues

Issues with the Thermostat?

A broken thermostat can cause many parts of the system to not work properly or even work too hard! If your furnace cycles a lot or if you feel a fluctuation in temperature then it might be time to look at the thermostat. Replacing your old thermostat to a "smart" model might also be a good idea. Smart thermostats allow you to monitor energy use and schedule heating settings!

No Heat (or not enough)?

Despite it being on do you feel as though there is no heat or not nearly enough heat coming through? This can have several causes, such as: the thermostat, gas, power, or a clogged filter. It can also be that your heater is not a suitable size for the room or home your trying to heat. In that case HTR Mechanical can help guide you to a more suitable heating system for your current HVAC set up.

Pilot Light or Faulty Ignition?

If you have a gas heater then your pilot light is where the "heat" comes from. In non-gas systems the pilot light is instead an ignition control. Best case a faulty pilot or ignition this just makes it difficult for your furnace to heat anything; at worst a faulty part can cause a fire! So if you suspect any problems with the pilot or ignition then call your HVAC professional right away!

Have you checked your air filters?

This is the most common problem and thankfully also an easy issue to fix! How often the filter should be changed varies depending on the size of the house, if there are pets and how frequently the furnace is used. A dirty or clogged air filter inhibits the ventilation and can cause the system to over work. So these filters must be changed regularly for a functional and efficient system.

Are your Vents & Ductwork Clean?

Since your HVAC works by cycling air (heated or cooled) throughout your home, the vents and ducts play a vital role in process. If the vents or ducts are dirty this not only means dirty air is circulating in your home but it also can wear down your furnace. Have a professional check them out and properly clean them regularly to avoid breaking your system when you need it most!

Is it the switches or breakers?

This may sound silly, but sometimes your furnace simply needs to be turned on! With it being off for half a year it can be easy to forget. Simply find the corresponding switch in your breaker and that can be an easy solution to your problems! If you can confirm your furnace is on but still isn't working properly then be sure to call HTR Mechanical for a diagnostic.

Noisy or Inefficient?

Furnaces and heaters can make different noises as they work but it is fairly quite. If you are hearing abnormal noises or extra loud noises then something is certain going wrong. They could signify clogged burners, reduced air flow and much more. Its important to do general maintenance to prevent problems before they can become full urgent repairs!

Frequent Cycles or Running Blower?

If the heater cycles between on and off frequently or if the blower seems to never stop running - then some professional helps is needed. A malfunctioning thermostat, a faulty limit switch, clogged filter or improper air flow can all be possible problems. Call an HVAC professional to fix it for you!

Furnaces vs. Boilers

Everything you Need to Know About

Boilers & Furnace Repairs

As winter approaches it is important to make sure your heating system is well maintained and ready to serve! First thing first is knowing what you have and how that impacts to kinds of things to look out for. If you have a furnace you’ll have different maintenance needs than if you have a boiler. Which also means furnace repairs are going to be different than boiler repairs. HTR Mechanical can help you with any HVAC system if they need maintenance or repair.

Furnace vs. Boilers

heater repair langhorne

Common Furnace Repair

  1. Cracked Heat Exchanger – This pricey repair can be prevented with regular maintenance. This part is important because it separates the combustion process from the breathing air in your furnace.
  2. Dirty Filters – If you want your furnace to run efficiently then you’ll want to make sure your filters are cleaned or replaced regularly.
  3. Slipped or Frayed Blower Belt – If you hear a high-pitched squeal then it might be the belt. The blower moves the warm air throughout the house, thus if the belt goes then the air isn’t being distributed.
  4. Electric Ignition or Pilot Light Control Problems – The ignition of pilot light is the heating element of the furnace, so if you notice a drop in heat you might need a professional to look at this.
  5. Malfunctioning Thermostat – If your thermostat is malfunctioning  it can mess with the fan and comfort levels of your home so if you notice anything off about it be sure to call for help.
  6. Worn Out Ball Bearings – Usually signified by a scraping sound, if you hear this you’ll want to turn off the furnace and call an HVAC expert right away.
Boiler repair levittown

Common Boiler Repair

  1. Leaks – Since boilers are designed to be airtight, any leaking is a severe issue. The source of the leak must be found, repaired and the lost water replaced right away.
  2. Low Water Pressure – Listen for any rumbling sounds because it is a sign of overheating. Leaving your system like this can cause extensive and pricey repairs.
  3. Corroded Parts – Rust sometimes can get into the boiler and usually means it needs to be replaced. This problem can be limited by regular maintence.
  4. Broken Circulator Pump – If your heat seems to have stopped but the boiler still seems to be running then the issue is likely the circulator pump. This is a common and fairly easy job for professional HVAC service providers.
  5. Dirty Tanks – Every now and then the water in the boiler gets dirty with sediment and needs to be replaced with clean water. Regular cleaning keepts the efficancy up in your boiler.
  6. Burnt-Out Heating Element – In electric boilers there are two heating elements that warm the water inside the tank. If one goes then the temperature will drop, and thus the element will need to be replaced.

Does your boiler need maintenance? Is your furnace in need of repair? Is your system ready for winter? In want for water heater service? Need a different HVAC service? HTR Mechanical is here for the greater Bucks County, PA areas! Contact us today for fast and professional HVAC service!
