Do AC Maintenance Before Summer Starts

Why you should get an early start on your Air Conditioning Maintenance.

Air Conditioning Maintenance

It’s been a mild winter so far this year. For the most part, it has been pretty easy on your heater. With a mild winter comes a hot and humid summer. We all know we have a few more weeks of winter left, but now is a good time to start thinking about air conditioning. No one wants their air conditioning system to have issues during the summer let alone in the middle of a heatwave. Investing in air conditioning maintenance now will prevent being stuck without AC later.

By taking action now before it gets warm enough to need air conditioning, we can save you a headache in the future.  We can clean and inspect your heating and air conditioning system now and take care of issues that may cause you problems in the summer. By cleaning your system regularly, you can prolong the life of the system and the efficiency. The cleaner a system is when it runs the more efficient it operates resulting in lower utility bills. While cleaning we are also inspecting each part of your system so if we can see, by taking measurements and collecting data, if a component that is not performing as the manufacturer intended. If we find any issues, we can recommend solutions to prevent a breakdown and costly repairs in the future.

Regular AC maintenance will prevent needing repairs later.

Some warning signs that your system may have some issues:

  1. The house is not cool even on mild days
  2. Your house is cool but it is still sticky feeling when you are moving around
  3. A house has an odor when the air is on
  4. Inside unit or outside unit is making weird noises
  5. There is water on the floor around the indoor unit

If you have any of these signs happening with your system, we can provide you with a solution and prevent a future headache.  Give us a call today, so we can give you a comfortable tomorrow.

Air Scrubbers vs Air Purifiers

Air Scrubbers vs Air Purifiers

Air Scrubbers vs Air Purifiers

Both air scrubbers and air purifiers have the sole purpose of cleaning the air in your home or office. Having one of these devices helps clear your space of allergens, particles and other elements you don’t want in your air. But if they both do the “same job” then whats the difference between them? Mainly, its one works much better than the other! Lets find out: Air Scrubbers vs Air Purifiers? Which is better at cleaning your home’s air?

Air Scrubbers vs Air Purifiers PA
Are air scrubbers worth the money PA

Air Purifiers

How do Air Purifiers Work?

Air purifiers clean the air by using a filtration system. As air goes through the device the filter catches particles and cleaner air is brought back into the room. Filters will have to be periodically replaced or washed then placed back in the purifier. An air purifier can range from $100-$1,000 and the filters can be $50 or more, which is cheaper than the air scrubber. The question becomes though, if it only cleans the air particles then does that mean it is missing a lot of other things in the air that you want cleaned too? Most likely since a lot of pollutants are not going to be caught by the filtration system! Some people use certain plants to get the same air quality, which questions how worth while the air purifier is. In our opinion, for an active home and to really achieve clean air quality then you’re better off taking the step up to an air scrubber.

Air Scrubbers

How do Air Scrubbers Work?

Air Scrubbers are not a stand alone device, rather it needs to be installed into your HVAC system! This means your whole home, not just a space or one room, is getting cleaner air. It doesn’t act as just a filter, but rather destroys allergens, dust, pollen, pollution, toxins, fumes, bacteria and even molds. Not only do air scrubbers clean the air but also aid in keeping surfaces clean too! Prices on an air scrubber varies from $500-$2000 which isn’t including installation costs. While the price is high, it is a worthy investment for improving your home’s air quality. As for maintenance, air scrubbers should be cleaned about every three months. Concidering these devices are used by NASA, military submarines and even at the Pentagon after 911, there is no doubt air scrubbers work and work incredibly well!

Are Air Scrubbers Worth the Money?

In the debate of Air Scrubbers VS Air Purifiers, its clear that air scrubbers are the best in drastically improving air quality. With that said, we often hear the question is an air scrubber worth the money? Because air scrubbers cost quite a bit more than air purifiers – it might be hard to see why getting an air scrubber installed is worth the investment.

Essentially it comes down to need. Do you have a large and busy family? Do you have lots of pets? Does your family suffer from allergies? Do you live in an area with high pollution? Is the indoor air quality in your home poor at best? If these apply to you then an air scrubber is truly worth some consideration. If these did not apply to you then something less extensive may suite you just fine. If you want to learn more about air scrubbers see our page where we go into more details about this powerful device.

What is HVAC?

Are you a new home owner? Someone in the market for an HVAC system? A curious researcher looking for some HVAC basics? Well, you’ve come to the right place! We at HTR Mechanical, LLC. are here to answer your HVAC questions such as “What is HVAC” and more!

What does HVAC stand for?

HVAC is an acronym for …

Heating

hvac levittown pa

Includes appliances like water heaters, furnaces, boilers and etc…

Ventilation

ac service company Levittown

Refers to vents, duct work and etc…

Air Conditioning

hvac newtown pa

Includes mini ductless splits, air scrubbers, and commercial AC, etc…

Together heating, ventilation and air conditioning make up your whole HVAC system. Their purpose is moving air, throughout your home or office, between the indoors and outdoors. Moreover, this circulates the air to keep it fresh but also allows for the air to be heated or cooled so everyone in the building is comfortable. Thus, it goes without saying that ventilation moves the air, the heater will warm the air and the air conditioner will cool the air.

What is HVAC System?

HVAC systems have the job of warming or cooling spaces but also improving indoor air quality so everyone in the home or office is comfortable. The ventilation system is responsible for bringing fresh air from outside in to the indoors. Additionally, there are two methods of ventilation, natural and mechanical.

Natural ventilation, which most homes can utilize, refers to air moving in and out of the building via windows, doors, vents and other openings.

Mechanical ventilation uses duct-work and other similar set ups to move outdoor air, inside. This is also how air can be filtered, warmed and cooled all year around.

When air is brought in it will go through a filter that catches dust, allergens and other particles. Then, depending on the actual room temperature and what your thermostat is set to the air will be moved to the heater or air conditioner before being pushed fully inside and in the room. Because of this, filters are very important to the maintenance of any HVAC system and air scrubbers can be installed for even cleaner air quality.

When was HVAC invented?

The first modern air conditioning system was invented in 1902 by an engineer names Willis Carrier. He built this version to combat humidity in a printing company building.   Although, other versions existed before that. For example, the Massachusetts Medical Building is regarded as the first U.S. building to have central heat and that was in the year 1816. Despite that, central heating didn’t become common until the 1950s. While having air conditioning was also common place in the 1950s, central air didn’t really become the norm till the 1970s.

How Does Air Conditioning Work?

How Does an Air Conditioner Work?

How AC Works

Now that summer is right around the corner, it’s almost time to switch from heating to air conditioning. Since we’ve had air conditioning since 1902 it’s easy to just take our hard-working systems for granted. It is important to understand the air conditioner your home has and the basics of how it works so not only can you use it effectively but also give it the proper care it needs so you’ll never be stuck in the heat! So what are the types and how do they work?

How Does An Air Conditioning
System Work?

The point of an air conditioner is to reduce the air temperature in a room. To accomplish these air conditioners work similarly to refrigerators. Both want to keep cold air in and hot air out, to do that they use refrigerant compounds. In an air conditioner, fans move hot air over refrigerant-filled coils. This cools the air and the air is then returned to the room.

How does your specific air conditioner work? It’s best to clarify that there are two main types of major air conditioning systems: central and split. There are more types as well but these are the two main systems being focused on today. The biggest difference between cental and split is where all the important parts, such as the evaporator, condenser, and compressor, are kept. Where these air conditioners and their components are placed will greatly affect how they function.

What Is The Central Air
Conditioning System?

Central air conditioning systems, or packaged air conditioners, hold all these parts in one cabinet. One unit, usually on the roof or outside on the pavement, houses the evaporator, coil, blower fan, compressor, and condensing coil. This system utilizes the ductwork in your home, just like your heating does. The how air is pulled out of a room through the return air ducts and into the evaporator. The air is cooled and returns to the room via the supply air ducts. The condenser coil takes that heat and releases it outside. While often regarded as more energy-efficient and great at filtering the air, the drawback is that ductwork will need regular maintenance.

Mini Ductless Air Conditioner

Example of a split, ductless, air conditioner.

What is a Split System in Air Conditioning?

Split air conditioning systems, or ductless air conditioners, have an indoor and outdoor cabinet. The indoor holds the condenser and compressor. The outdoor cabinet contains the evaporator and sometimes more depending on if your split system doubles as your heating. Rather than ducts, the split system uses pipes to connect the two parts. Refrigerants in the pipes cool the air as it cycles through. To switch to this system is more expensive, but this system is known for being very efficient in cooling large areas quickly.

Knowing about your air conditioner and how it works is important for the smart homeowner whether that is towards maintenance or purchasing. During the hottest of summer days, nothing is nicer than entering your comfortably cooled home, and your air conditioner is to thank for that. Make sure your taking good care of it so you are never left without your home oasis during the summer.
